What to do about Spam

Hello everyone

Firstly, we're really sorry that you may have received spam messages originating from this site. We've always tried to minimise bogus memberships, and suspend any as soon as we spot them, before they start splurging nonsense or offensive spam all over our great little website.

We must firstly reassure everyone that no one can get your email address from JRQ.com.

Here's what we do to prevent spam memberships

On sign up (you'll probably remember this) all members have to re-type a distorted word (known as captcha) and answer an arithmetic question, also they must answer some profile questions to give a little information about themselves. These three stages stop automatic computer-generated sign-ups and allow us to see any nonsensical answers in the profiles, a sure sign of a spammer. We check all membership profiles and we'll suspend anyone with a sparse or iffy profile, or ask follow-up questions to verify the member is a real person.

Here's what we do to prevent spam messages reaching you

If a spammer gets through our defences and manages to send spam messages, there's a chance you will receive email notification that a message is waiting for you in your inbox at JRQ. We have altered the notification settings so that if a message is waiting for you, you will simply be told there is a message in your inbox, not what the message contains. If it is spam we will have almost certainly deleted it before you sign in to see it. This may lead to the occasional 'vanishing' message, where you sign in to pick up a message and find your inbox empty - but it's better than receiving spam, right?!

Let us be clear again, no one can get your email address from JRQ.com. Unless, of course, you send it out yourself. Which brings us to...

What you can do

  • Don't click on links provided by suspicious sources.
  • Don't reply to emails that barely make sense or seem completely off topic (we're quilters and we are likely to chat about that rather than anything else).
  • You can choose to switch off email notifications in 'settings' in the profile box at the top right of every page. You will then not be informed by JRQ of any messages or new content, but you can check in as often as you like to see what's going on.
  • Please do report anything suspicious by clicking on Contact Us on the menu bar at the top of every page, or by clicking here.
  • Thanks for reading all of this. Sorry to rattle on, but we care passionately about the integrity of this site and feel protective about the friendly, fun community we have here.

Spam (as Mr Tech Wizard once said) - together we'll crack it!
