How To Enter

THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED

But we're leaving this information here in case you need to refer back to it,
or memorize it for next year!

Here is some useful information about how to enter the Jelly Roll Dream Challenge competition. Don't forget to also check out the terms and conditions and FAQs for more information.

1. Make sure you understand all the instructions and have read the Terms and Conditions

2. Design and make a quilt making the best use of a jelly roll. Moda jelly rolls are available in most quilt stores plus it is also permissible to use strip rolls from other companies or you may cut your own forty 2½inx 42in strips. Additional background and border fabric is allowed up to a combined quantity of 3 yards (2.75 metres). Rotary cutting quilting rulers and squares and any specialty tools may be used. Any tools you use must be clearly stated in your instructions and must be readily available. You do not have to do any quilting as the longarm quilting and finishing of your quilt is part of the prize for the lucky twelve winners.

3. Submit your entry form along with a maximum of ten files, to include up to five photographs of your patchwork top, plus instructions on how to make it and any diagrams, as well as your entry fee of $25 (or UK£15). You can do this via the website by clicking here or sending your entry form and photos to us via post (addresses below) before the 1st June 2011.

4. Put 31st July 2011 in your diary to find out if you're a finalist!

HELPFUL TIPS

WRITING YOUR INSTRUCTIONS

You need to set out exactly how the quilt was made in a way that an everyday quilter would be able to follow. If your quilt is selected as one of the twelve winners it will be celebrated in a book, so make the instructions really clear.

Have a look at this chapter from Pam and Nicky’s book Jelly Roll Quilts as a guide to what your instructions need to look like, what you need to include and in what order. Don’t worry if your diagrams don’t look as professional as those here – as long as they’re clear and understandable then we will do the rest! Don’t copy this pattern for your competition entry though – we are looking for original quilt designs.

Also make sure that you include:

1. ‘You will need’ list – to say how much background and border fabric you used (if any).

2. Finished size measurement – measure your quilt top in inches to let us know the dimensions.

3. Cutting instructions – list how many units of each shape you cut before you pieced them. Include advice here about whether the Jelly Roll had to be sorted into different colours first and how many units of each colour you cut.

4. Step-by-step piecing instructions – describe how you built up each different block and in what order everything went together. If your quilt isn’t made up of blocks think how best to describe how it was constructed.

5. Adding the borders – if your quilt top has borders, say how they were added at the end.

6. Rulers and squares – rotary cutting quilting rulers and squares plus any speciality tools are permissible so long as they are readily available.

Remember: you don’t need to say how to construct the layers, quilt or bind the quilt. It’s only the pieced top that needs to be explained.

TAKING PHOTOS OF YOUR QUILT TOP

Photographing quilts indoors can sometimes result in poorly-lit pictures which don’t show the quilts off to the best advantage. Take your photographs in the best possible natural light.

No more than five photographs of your pieced top, including:

1. at least one picture of the complete design (the quilt top should be laid flat in this image, either on top of a bed, for example, or ask someone to hold it up for you)

2. at least one close-up (showing one complete block, for example)
